Since its first version which was developed in 1985, EZ 2000 is in use by thousands of dentists nationwide for practice management and digital dentistry. The mission of EZ 2000 has been to create easy-to-use software integrated with quality yet affordable digital dental technology. This enables the dentist to increase production and collections without having to pay a 'fortune' to accomplish these goals.

The client was looking to release the latest version of EZ2000 without having to rewrite the entire application as it would be far too costly and time consuming.

Rheal recommended to use the open source platform that Open Dental provided to ensure the necessary basic foundation required for a robust dental practice management software, however the challenge was to understand the existing features of Open Dental and add/extend the new features such that they would work in sync with the existing features of the application.

• Appointments:

  Lets users create appointments and patient schedules, with tools to edit and modify appointments, show pop-up alerts, financials, and medical notes, recall scheduling, patient communication and see production by user.

• Family Module:

  Includes tools to set up family accounts, with specified guarantors and family members, and a Super Family option for extended families. Also allows users to create family-based insurance and discount plans.

• Accounts:

  Gives users a module to create, organize and view patients’ financial and claim history, with tools to set up payment plans, instalment plans, family balance aging and dues and a communications log.

• Treatment Plan:

  Allows users to create, edit, store, manage and prioritize treatment plans for patients or families. It also lets them electronically send insurance preauthorization forms.

• Charting:

  Provides a platform to enter and organize patients’ clinical info and create 3D dental charts — such as tooth, ortho and perio charts. It also lets users create and organize progress notes.

• Imaging:

  Gives users a platform to scan, store and organize most images, radiographs, forms and letters. Includes tools to scan, print, import (.doc, PDF, .xls) and acquire images from dental imaging devices. Image editing tools such as zoom, pan and crop let users modify x-rays and scans as needed.

• Management Module:

  Creates a separate area for miscellaneous management operations such as billing, deposits, inventory, accounting, email management, staff management and messaging.

• Billing & Insurance Claims:

  Application automatically validates e-claims and alerts user of any missing information. Full integration with Trojan Benefit Determination & Managed Care & DentiFi & Online Collections, Electronic Insurance Claims with all carriers and clearinghouses.

Rheal helped the client rebrand Open Dental as EZ2000 and also added following new features to the Open Dental software platform.

• Credit Card Processing:

  Open Dental has integrated with different credit Card Processing companies to allow practices to take credit card payments directly through the payment window.

  In the EZ2000 application, we extended this feature by adding integration with “Payeezy and Clover Connect” Credit card processing companies. The patients can make payment from the Credit Card Device (POS) or Online transaction using the Clover Connect Integration.

  We have also added the functionality for an automatic real time transaction entry being posted back into the database after a successful payment so as to avoid duplicate entry of payments into the billing software.

• eRx:

  EZ2000 provided a cost affective way for generating an eRX (electronic prescription). We added an integration with DxScript, a cloud-based ePrescribing solution provider company. The users/practitioners must sign up with DxScript to use this feature.

  For generating an eRX, using the DxScript webservice, the application sends the patient information in the HL7 ADT* format to the DxScript and open DxScripts webpage where the practitioners can write the prescription.

  *HL7ADT: Health Level Seven (HL7®) is a standard for exchanging information between medical information systems. It is widely deployed and covers the exchange of information in several functional domains.

• Licensing Module:

  EZ2000 also wanted to distribute the software as SaaS (Software as a Service) model. We developed a custom code licensing module that checks for the license expiry date and restricts the user from using the application if the expiry date has passed and the user hasn’t renewed their license/subscription. It also prompts user to make payment for license extension, 15 and 7 days prior to their license expiry.

• Installer

  We created a customized installer for the EZ2000 application that installs the application, MySQL data engine and the .Net Framework.

• Rebranding

  Rebranded the Open Dental application by adding the EZ2000 company logo and name throughout the application.
